Nichijou (日常, Nichijō, "Everyday Life") is a surreal comedy manga series about cute and wacky hijinks, featuring an ensemble cast of high school students and the town. The series is known as My Ordinary Life in English, and follows the quirky citizens in the town of Tokisadame, of school students, a girl robot, an elementary-school-age scientist, a goat-riding "aristocrat"[1], and many other residents and shopkeepers in the town. This combines into one entertaining and beautiful experience focused on the series of miracles that is everyday life.

The manga was created by Keiichi Arawi, and began serialisation on 2006 in Japan. The anime series was animated and produced by Kyoto Animation, and broadcast in Japan on independent television stations from April 11, 2011, to September 26, 2011. This was after an earlier original video animation (OVA) was released in March. This is commonly considered to be a sketch slice-of-life comedy, where the gags are presented in a series of separate scenes, of which some are connected to each other chronologically or in context.[citation needed]

Manga[]

There are 12 manga volumes made by Keiichi Arawi, which were published as volumes, but began as short comics serialized in Shōnen Ace[2]. The anime is actually based on the manga, so it isn't a stand-alone anime. There are, in fact, two more volumes that the anime does not cover, and they are both as well written as the anime.

Kyoto Animation did not adopt the last two volumes, because the second last volume was released around two years after the anime had finished airing. By that time, they had already moved on to other projects, and it would have been too long a wait for even an OVA to be made.

Anime[]

Many of the scenes in the Nichijou anime are categorized based on the title of the scene. Scenes within a category could have the same running gag or general structure. A few instances of these categories include 'Helvetica Standard', 'Short Thoughts', and 'Things We Think are Cool'.

Its discontinuation is largely attributed to poor DVD sales[3], and regular Japanese channel networks do not air the anime series anymore. In addition, the series was originally licensed in North America by Bandai Visual and streamed on Crunchyroll and VRV, at one point was owned by The Chernin Group and later AT&T, under the name of My Ordinary Life, and later Nichijou.

It was taken off Crunchyroll in 2014 and briefly returned to the platform in 2018 before Funimation ended its partnership with Crunchyroll in the same year. [4] After Bandai Visual closed in 2012, Nichijou licensed and officially translated into English by Funimation. As of 2023, Nichijou can once again be watched on Crunchyroll, which Sony, the owner of Funimation, acquired in 2021 and the latter was renamed into Crunchyroll the next year.[5]
